Vuvuzelas and K’naan Make Noise at the World Cup

Written on June 14, 2010 at 13:12, by HTTN

Want to hear the most annoying sound in the world?  Lloyd, from Dumb and Dumber, thought he had it figured out years ago:

But Lloyd had never heard the sound of 90,000 people simultaneously blowing vuvuzelas.

If you’re wondering how they’re being received by the rest of the world, here are some tweets that reveal the story:

@NickyHaldenby: Vuvuzelas. Meaning: Annoying sound which sounds like a pack of angry bees. Becomes deafening after 90 minutes…

@DAFTCHILD: I can hear those vuvuzelas even when the games not on… Kill me now

@TomMcFeeley: Can BP stop the oil leak by forcing all the vuvuzelas from South Africa down the freaking hole??? That would kill two huge birds (oh sorry).

My Problem With Vuvuzelas

vuvuzelapic1Having watched a lot of the beautiful game over the years, one of the most enjoyable aspects is always the atmosphere of the crowds – the chants, the songs, and the thunderous cheers.

On Sunday, when Asamoah Gyan of Ghana was awarded the penalty kick that allowed him to score the game’s only goal against Serbia, we missed hearing what should’ve been a deafening celebration from a largely African crowd.  Instead, the drone of the horns continued.

When England faced off against USA on Saturday, the British song “When You Walk Through the Storm”, was replaced by the lovely “Vuvuzelas in the Night.”

What I don’t understand is why it’s so steady and constant.  Seriously, are these vuvuzela blowing fans even watching the match, or are they so focused on their horns that they don’t even care?

According to Danny Jordaan, World Cup organizing committee chief, there is a chance that the horns could be banned: “We’ve had some broadcasters and individuals [complaining] and it’s something we are evaluating on an on-going basis.”

Danny, I speak for everyone in the world, besides those who paid $3 apiece for those noisemakers, when I say, do it!

Waving Flags Still Going Strong

Should K’naan’s song Waving Flags not have retired by now?  It’s amazing year began in February, when the song became the unofficial anthem of the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Games.

Then when Haiti experienced its devastating Earthquake, the song turned into a hymn of hope for a traumatized nation.

Now, Waving Flags has reached its highest point yet, as it is the official song of the 2010 World Cup.

See K’naan’s performance of the song at the opening ceremonies of the tournament here:

I also found this great World Cup montage, made with the same song.

Agreed. This is the by far the most annoying sound in the world. I’d rather mute my TV and miss the commentary than listen to a wasps nest all morning.

Seems like lots of people are choosing the “mute” option over vuvuzelas and commentary.
