Monday Movie: Serena Williams Makes NO Sense When She’s Angry

Written on September 12, 2011 at 04:32, by HTTN

By now you’ve probably heard about Serena Williams’ outburst during the U.S. Open final. Early in the second set, she yelled to celebrate before the point was over. It was called a “code violation” and the point was given to her opponent, Samantha Stosur.

You can see the entire succession of events in the video below:

Serena Blows Up at Umpire

Serena Goes Off

At the 1:50 mark of the video, Serena is shown reacting to the umpire’s call. She says:

“Are you the one that screwed me over last time here? Yeah, you are. I see, I see. You come after me, and I promise you, that’s not cool. That is totally not cool.”

Sounds like Serena was about to make a promise that would have had her kicked out of the U.S. Open again and then thought better of it. Instead, she ended up promising the ref that coming after her is “totally not cool.”

At the 2:50 mark of the video, Serena continues the tirade from her seat:

“If you ever see me walking down the hall, turn the other way, because you’re out of control. Turn, ’cause you’re out of control. You’re totally out of control. You’re a hater and you’re just unattractive inside. Who would do such a thing? And I never complain. Wow. What a loser. Give me a code violation because I express who I am? We’re in America the last time I checked.”

Serena, first, you do complain, as we remember all too well from 2009.

Second, “unattractive inside?” Pot calling the kettle black here at all?

Third, I don’t think the code violation was given because you’re expressing who you are. The caution was not for wearing that ridiculous bright pink dress and those massive earrings. It’s because you broke the rules. We play by the rules of the sport, the last time I checked.

She then turned to the ball girl:

“Can I have some water?” then back to the umpire. “Or am I going to get violated for water? Really, don’t even look at me. I promise you, don’t look at me, because I am not the one. Don’t look my way.”

Don’t even look at you because you’re not the one? Pretty sure she’s looking at you because you’re ranting like a lunatic… but your hoping she was looking at you because you’re the one might explain the tension a little better.

Update: Williams has been fined $2000 by the U.S. Open, as per this report.

I stopped being a Serena fan a while ago so I’m not defending her as a
fan. I think this is much ado about nothing. It is very true that some
of the rants were silly but she was just venting. I’ve seen many players
vent about bad calls or crack their racquets. I’m glad she didn’t threaten to kill anyone or become verbally abusive.

I find it really hypocritical that people that grew up with McEnroe, Ilie, or even Goran Ivansevic would
    make a fuss over this.

Mac and the other announcers didn’t know about the rule and had to get clarification on it. Obviously, Serena didn’t know the point would be awarded to her opponent either.
I thought if there was no way the opponent could get the ball back, then the ref would not rule. Considering how so many ladies grunt and shriek excessively, I have to wonder about the ruling. When the players are shrieking like a banshee on every strike, can we use the hindrance rule? Please!

Regardless, the ruling had no effect on the outcome of the match. Samantha Stosur clearly played superior to Serena and deserved to win. The focus should be on this awesome Aussie who put on a fantastic display instead of Serena.
